"Louisiana's scenic byways will take you off the beaten path to see much of what makes this state so special. The byways, which cross almost every area of the state, bring you into the heart of the distinctive scenic beauty and cultural uniqueness that is Louisiana.
Louisiana is blessed with a unique array of cultures not many states in America share. These diverse cultures complement one another, which makes Louisiana one-of-a-kind. We take great pride in Louisiana's diversity and enjoy sharing our culture with friends and neighbors all over the globe.
While much of America slept, the Axis powers were moving aggressively across Europe, Asia and the Pacific. The German invasion of Poland in 1939 officially started World War II. Long before the United States declared war on Germany and Japan, in December, 1941, Louisiana had been making military and industrial preparations for the war effort.
Just a few of the Louisiana activities included the military training in Central Louisiana called the Great Louisiana Maneuvers; development and construction of the Higgins PT boat and landing craft; Chennault’s Flying Tigers; German submarine watches off the Gulf of Mexico by civilians, and later during the war, Higgins Industries’ involvement in the making of the atom bomb.
The Louisiana Music Trail follows a path that meanders through countless cultures and generations of history. It cuts its way through major urban centers and then spreads out to the rural countryside, echoing the constant refrain of diversity as it twists and winds its way through Louisiana. All along the way, it carries the melodic dreams, hopes, laments and boundless spirit of Louisiana.
Bounded on one side by the Atchafalaya Basin and on the other by the countryside stretching north from Lake Maurepas, Plantation Country is a pocket of mystery, elegance and majesty, of historic towns and rural customs, of the rich delta lands and the culture of the people who drew their life and wealth from the alluvial soil. And inevitably, it is about the river that made it possible, the river from which it all grew: the Mississippi. For a little of your time and a portion of your imagination, this region will yield its ageless treasures.
All great pleasures are great because of their originality and uniqueness, their lasting ability to please and engage. Such is the mystic charm of Cajun Country, a land of towering sugar cane, winding bayous, Acadian cottages and crawfish ponds. If you have any preconceptions, you had best set them aside before you explore these historic towns and cities with vibrant folklife, colorful carefree traditions and their own way of speaking that will make you wonder if you really are in the U.S. This region freely even joyfully! breaks many of the rules by which other destinations define themselves.
